Episode Transcript
[00:00:00] Speaker A: Welcome, listener, to the return slot of Horror.
We.
This is a very special staff meeting episode for multiple reasons. One, it's been a year, Mickey.
[00:00:17] Speaker B: A year. Yeah, a year.
[00:00:18] Speaker A: Mickey is back. Mickey is back. Mickey has been.
What have you been doing, Mickey?
[00:00:24] Speaker B: Yeah, I've been traveling the world doing things for the military.
Can't get into all of it, but I will tell you that I have gotten to spend a lot time all across Europe, really exploring and meeting amazing people and, you know, and I'm just so happy to be back to the return slot of Molly. Return slot.
Thank you. Yes.
[00:00:46] Speaker A: Yep.
[00:00:46] Speaker B: Okay. Perfect. Perfect.
So happy to be back, especially around this season.
[00:00:53] Speaker A: And Molly is joining us this evening in the basement. Molly. Hey, how's it going? Of Horror.
[00:00:59] Speaker C: Perfect way to be on Basement of Horror. I'm just here to say that.
[00:01:03] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. Okay. Okay. Now you've said too much. That's too many words to get back to the support.
[00:01:12] Speaker A: So, yes, it's. It's a wonderful time of the year. It's the spooky season. Mickey's back, and I needed to call a staff meeting after hours after the videos, after the video store has been closed up because we need to create a section in the video store which originally came to me as.
As the. The queen of Halloween.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: Right, The Halloween queen.
[00:01:35] Speaker A: But then I got in my head about it and I was talking to you guys because I'm like, it's. Should I be gendering it? Should it be gender? Does it have to. Do we. Do we choose a non binary title? Does it have to be a queen? Can it be a man? Can. In. In. And you know. Yeah.
Like, am I over? Am I overthinking it, Molly?
[00:01:53] Speaker C: I think you're overthinking it.
[00:01:55] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But to be fair, see, it's hard taking advice from Molly because Molly is like Brando or something where they're like, advice from them really isn't good advice because.
Because you sort of like, you kind of just nail things all the time and you just like, your flow is so perfect.
But I am a. It is very true. And I'm a classic overthinker.
[00:02:21] Speaker C: I think it's just whatever the queen is to you. Right? So like, whatever that means.
[00:02:25] Speaker A: Well, I came up with the. I came up with the title whatever that queen is.
[00:02:28] Speaker C: Yeah, you're Halloween Queen, whatever that means.
[00:02:31] Speaker A: Yes. And I came up with a title for that that I wanted to float by you guys.
[00:02:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:02:36] Speaker A: That we can put up in the store.
[00:02:38] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:02:39] Speaker A: The most unholy majesty of all hallows Eve Video Store Edition.
It's a lot of words.
[00:02:48] Speaker B: It's a legend.
Unless you even understood every word once.
[00:02:55] Speaker A: The Most Unholy Majesty of All Hallows Eve Video Store Edition.
[00:03:04] Speaker C: That's a good beat.
[00:03:05] Speaker B: The most. The most. You say the most. The most.
[00:03:09] Speaker A: The most.
Which could be anyone, right? So, yeah, if we.
Listener.
Yeah. So listener, please know we didn't discuss who we were picking for this. So. So we don't know what our other picks are. So we could all have picked the same person, right?
[00:03:32] Speaker B: Yes, we could have. I also just want you to know, listener, he doesn't prompt us with any of this. So this is all the first time I'm hearing it.
[00:03:40] Speaker A: So it's like throwing it at you right now.
[00:03:42] Speaker C: Changing my answer in my mind right now.
[00:03:45] Speaker B: Speaking like, well, now you mean it's all open. It could be anybody.
[00:03:49] Speaker A: It could be anybody. But I mean, like, I think we all have an idea in mind of what that is. But under the.
[00:03:56] Speaker B: So under the. My understanding was that were choosing what we consider to be the Queen of Halloween.
[00:04:01] Speaker A: Yes, Her Majesty. We.
[00:04:03] Speaker B: We did discuss understanding that. We don't have to genderize it.
[00:04:08] Speaker C: I think we're thinking too hard on it.
[00:04:10] Speaker A: Yeah, for sure.
[00:04:11] Speaker C: I think we should just get after it.
[00:04:14] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:14] Speaker A: Okay. Okay. Okay. So you don't want to riff on the most unholy majesty of All Hallows Eve that Video Store Edition.
What do you got?
I want to hear Molly's flow state of what that might be.
[00:04:27] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:28] Speaker C: What am I giving my answer right now?
[00:04:30] Speaker A: Okay. Okay.
When you're ready.
[00:04:33] Speaker C: Of the Unholy Majesty. Wait, I'm confused.
[00:04:38] Speaker A: What is your reworking of the title I came up with? I mean, how the Queen of Halloween is so simple. It's so straight into the point. So I guess the Most unholy majesty of all Hallow is Eve is Video Store Edition is too much.
[00:04:52] Speaker C: No, I like it.
[00:04:54] Speaker A: I like it. I like that idea of it being in the store
[00:04:59] Speaker C: a little bit. I like for people to see it and then be like, what I thought,
[00:05:05] Speaker B: I thought, I thought. Hello, Queen.
[00:05:08] Speaker A: Oh, okay. So like Mickey. It's Mickey and Molly both sort of do this non thinking thing, but Molly's is sort of like a maverick centric thing. And. And Mickey's is more of like.
Like.
[00:05:28] Speaker B: Paul Blartmong everybody. EL Bundy, I would say.
[00:05:32] Speaker C: What are we doing? What are we even doing?
[00:05:33] Speaker B: What are we even doing?
[00:05:34] Speaker C: What are we even doing?
[00:05:35] Speaker B: So I will. I think that that the only reason I'm going to say why I'm pitching. Hello. Queen is. A queen can be of any gender.
[00:05:46] Speaker A: Right.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: As well as a king can be of any gender in my. In my.
In my. In many respects. So it's just. I just was thinking Halloween, you know,
[00:05:57] Speaker A: I like the busy signs in the video store. You know what I mean?
[00:06:00] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, I get it.
[00:06:01] Speaker C: I like. And I do like the little confusion. I like for people to look at it and have the second. Yeah.
[00:06:07] Speaker B: Then they're like, unholy. They don't say anything of Halloween.
Video Store Edition.
[00:06:19] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:06:20] Speaker B: Is it the Video Store edition or just Video Store Edition?
[00:06:23] Speaker C: No, no, no, no. Just Video Store Edition. Right.
[00:06:26] Speaker A: I'd go, right. It wasn't. It wasn't the video Store edition, But I do. I like this. Is Molly adding to it? So there's more words now?
[00:06:34] Speaker C: No, no, Mickey did that. We don't need the. The drop the. The save the time.
[00:06:40] Speaker B: And I believe. I believe in this situation, it would be the. Not a. The.
[00:06:44] Speaker C: Well,
[00:06:48] Speaker A: I don't know.
[00:06:50] Speaker B: It's the most unholy majesty.
[00:06:53] Speaker A: The most of the most.
[00:06:56] Speaker C: The most.
[00:06:57] Speaker A: The most.
[00:07:00] Speaker B: This is great radio, guys,
[00:07:03] Speaker C: of All Hallows Eve.
[00:07:06] Speaker B: Okay, listeners, weigh in. Is it the.
[00:07:09] Speaker A: Is it the I'm sold?
[00:07:11] Speaker C: The more I say it, the more I like it. The more I say it, the more I'm sold.
[00:07:15] Speaker A: Speaking of, the more the better. We all have some spooky drinks this evening that fit in with the. With the time of year. Molly, what's spooky? Are you drinking a spooky cocktail there? What do you got there?
[00:07:26] Speaker C: Sure I am.
This is one of my favorite cocktails all year round, but especially during Halloween. And this is the classic corpse reviver number two.
[00:07:37] Speaker B: What is that?
Please tell us.
[00:07:42] Speaker C: Well, if you must know, it's equal parts gin, Lillette blanc, Cointreau, lemon juice, splash of absinthe, ice in a shaker, shake it up, and then you pour it into a glass that has been washed in absinthe.
[00:08:05] Speaker A: Well, I think this is the most fancy drink of the evening fit for a queen
[00:08:15] Speaker C: or the most unholy majesty of All Hallows Eve?
[00:08:19] Speaker A: Yes.
[00:08:20] Speaker B: Video store Edition.
[00:08:23] Speaker A: Liquor store Edition.
Mickey, what do you got there?
[00:08:28] Speaker B: Yeah, me, I'm repping some local Pittsburgh brewery called Local Remedy.
This is their first. This is their inaugural Pumpkin Spice Ale.
[00:08:40] Speaker A: It's cool.
[00:08:41] Speaker B: It's good. You know, I do the pumpkin beers during the season. It's the only time of the year I'm doing. I'm not seeking them outside the season. Not you can really find them that much. But I really like this Beer. It is a very easy crushable pumpkin ale. And it's not overly sweet, it's not overly pumpkin. It's a beer with a hint of pumping pumpkin, pumpkin spice.
And there's a cool wonder.
Yeah.
[00:09:02] Speaker A: Oh, yeah. I got a little art.
[00:09:04] Speaker C: Not too pumpkiny.
Yeah.
[00:09:09] Speaker A: I am having in my. In my witch's cauldron tea mug that was handmade that I got off of Etsy.
I'm having there's this really cool tea company called Magic Hour Tea. And like all their teas come in like very witchy looking like jars. And I'm having candy corn, which is like a honey bush vanilla cream, sort of like candy corn flavored inspired tea. And then I add honey to it and some vanilla collagen to it to make it and some top it with cinnamon and it's, you know, it's a fun, warm, tasty Halloween treat.
[00:09:50] Speaker B: Non pretentious.
[00:09:57] Speaker C: I don't even know how to say the tea. Like, I didn't know how to say the title at the beginning.
[00:10:04] Speaker A: Magic hours Candy corn.
[00:10:06] Speaker B: Yeah.
It's really uncomplicated tea to make at home during the fall.
So what, what, why the vanilla collagen as opposed to like.
Is this a thing for you now? Like vanilla collagen?
[00:10:20] Speaker A: I like. So Molly got me into. Molly got me into doing tea in the evenings.
And I just, I like the. It's. I do take collagen. I go on and off taking collagen.
And it's just, you know, the vanilla flavored is. Works well in so many different things and adds like a nice sweetness to it. So I just like to mix it in with things, you know, any kind of tea.
[00:10:46] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:10:47] Speaker A: A Royes, a green, whatever.
[00:10:50] Speaker B: Earl Gray.
[00:10:51] Speaker A: Speaking of candy corn. Oh, no. Do you guys like no.
Mickey Ear Gray?
[00:10:56] Speaker C: I don't love an Earl Gray. And I also don't like no. No candy corn.
[00:11:00] Speaker A: Okay. Have you tried this is what I've heard, right. Candy corn. Us people don't like it. What? Because the, the texture and it's just sweet without having like a specific.
[00:11:09] Speaker B: It's just. It's just like sugary.
[00:11:14] Speaker C: Need something more pizzazz. Yeah.
[00:11:19] Speaker B: Its flavor is sweet.
[00:11:21] Speaker A: I gotta, I gotta pitch for you. Apparently you should. The way you're supposed to eat candy corn is that you mix in salted peanuts so that you get the salty crunch of the nutty peanut and then a little bit of the sweet, which sort of helps with that. I don't. I'll put out a bowl of it. We'll see. I mean, I like it visually during this time of year. You know what I mean?
[00:11:42] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:43] Speaker A: Right.
Especially the pumpkin shaped ones.
But yeah, I'd say try it out. I'd say try, try it out. We'll try it out. We'll have a bowl of customers because who cares about them, right?
[00:11:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:11:57] Speaker C: If they don't like it, get out.
[00:11:59] Speaker B: I, I also, I think, I think there's a, there's like. So for me as a kid growing up, whenever I saw candy corn, it was only around the season. Right. And it always was just. I, I was excited because of the look and it looks so cool. It's so Halloweeny, but just doesn't pack anything unique in the flavor. I think that's my issue with it.
[00:12:22] Speaker C: You need, you know what you need? Here's what you need. You need a white chocolate Reese's ghost.
[00:12:28] Speaker A: Oh, that's gonna come into play later, I think because. Okay, so the concept for this staff meeting, right, is we're, we're trying to find out who is the most unholy majesty of all hallows eve. Or maybe we'll just say the queen of Halloween to make it, to make it easier to say the Halloween.
Yeah. So we all have a pick. We all don't know who these, who's the other pick is. And I asked to match your, your queen or your majesty with like a candy.
[00:13:00] Speaker B: Right.
[00:13:00] Speaker A: I don't know if that permeated my, the text message, maybe not. So someone might be coming up with it on the spot, I don't know. But that's sort of the pitch.
So. And then we'll make our case and we'll sort of decide at the end will we pick one or we'll just put all this stuff into this section that this special display we're going to have up during the spooky season. Now normally I would go last, but I think maybe I should go first because.
[00:13:29] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:13:31] Speaker A: You know, like very much like me.
It's. I have, it's long.
[00:13:41] Speaker C: I.
[00:13:41] Speaker B: And also you don't want any of us to say your pick first and take that moment on this.
[00:13:48] Speaker A: No, no, no. Because I would. This is what I was excited about is like I would love it if we, if, if there is crossover to know, like do our reasons the same or are they different and what are those differences? You know what I mean? So I'm super excited about this. But I, I thought mine's probably going to be the most labor because I have like a bun. The notes here. I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna.
You know, run it into the ground. But. Okay, I'm just gonna start. Can I start, please? Tell us your.
[00:14:15] Speaker C: Your.
[00:14:15] Speaker A: So my pick.
[00:14:16] Speaker C: Why don't you start?
[00:14:18] Speaker A: My pick includes someone who has starred and I. Okay, So I have 20 entries total here, right. 18 of them are films.
Three of them are television shows. Of the 18, six are obvious Halloween picks, two are honorable mentions, seven are just horror, spooky film.
Three of the 18 have spooky, Halloweeny sounding names, but are not spookier Halloween at all.
[00:14:45] Speaker B: I know the answer to this is,
[00:14:47] Speaker A: do you know who's my 100%?
[00:14:49] Speaker B: Jam.
Jam.
[00:14:51] Speaker A: No, no, no, no. Not Jamie Peterson. No, it's not Molly. What do you. Who do you think my pick is?
[00:14:58] Speaker C: Well, I don't know.
[00:15:00] Speaker A: Okay, so my pick for the Queen of Halloween is Christina Ricci.
[00:15:05] Speaker B: Oh, geez.
[00:15:07] Speaker A: Am I the only one who picked Christina Richards?
[00:15:10] Speaker B: You are the only one.
[00:15:10] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:15:11] Speaker A: Thank you.
[00:15:12] Speaker B: Great pick.
[00:15:12] Speaker C: Especially I feel ashamed for not even putting her on the list.
[00:15:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:17] Speaker A: So this is shame on me. I was watching one of the movies that I'm about to list, and I was like, how many? It's like I could think of six off the top of my head.
[00:15:25] Speaker B: Just.
[00:15:26] Speaker A: And I'm like, how have I never thought of her as the. I always think.
You know what I mean? Like, so. Of obvious ones. Right, Right. We got Mermaids, which is a super fall vibes movie. It has Christina Ricci literally, like, has a jack o' lantern on her head at one point in the movie and gets knocked over, and she's with Winona Ryder, who I think is an arguable a Queen of Halloween pick. So we got Mermaids, 1990, 1991. We got the Addams Family. Right. 1993, Addams Family Values, 1995, Casper, which I rewatched recently. That's a really fucking crazy movie.
[00:16:08] Speaker C: I tried so hard to put it on last week outside on our projector, and it never worked.
[00:16:14] Speaker B: Bill Pullman's kind of.
[00:16:16] Speaker A: Yeah, he's great. It's. It's great. I love the. I love the movie. It's a visually stunning movie, but it, like, it reeks of, like, it was written by a white man. Because Casper has no. He has no idea of what consent is. Throughout that film, he is constantly forcing Christina Ricci's character to do things she doesn't want.
[00:16:35] Speaker B: Want to do.
[00:16:36] Speaker A: Right.
Check it out. It's wild. It's a wild movie.
[00:16:40] Speaker B: It's cool.
[00:16:41] Speaker A: All right, so Casper. And we got, of course, a movie we've covered on this podcast. 1999. Sleepy Hollow.
[00:16:47] Speaker B: Beautiful movie.
[00:16:48] Speaker A: Right? And then I don't know if you guys have ever seen 2005's Wes Cravens the Cursed, which is a werewolf movie that borders into comedy with Jesse Eisenberg.
Oh, Judy. Judy Greer's in it. Who's in? You know, the Halloween films.
[00:17:07] Speaker B: Remakes. Yeah.
[00:17:10] Speaker A: So then I have two honorable mentions. Right. We have the 1990 film now and Then. Molly. Did you ever see now and Then?
[00:17:17] Speaker B: I saw now and Then. Oh, yeah. How could you?
[00:17:19] Speaker A: So it's a summer movie, but it does feature a pivotal scene where they do a graveyard seance.
So you kind of just like throw that in there. Right. And then there is a short film made in 1997 called Little Red Riding Hood. It's like a. It's like a black and white sort of like German expressionistic sort of vibes where the werewolf. Where the. The wolf is a ballet dancer. And like, it's like a very sexual sort of thing with Christina Ricci as the Little Red Riding Hood. And it's like weird and funny and it's on. It's on Vimeo. I highly recommend you check out 1997's Little Red Riding Hood starring Christina Ricci. It's the perfect background. It's. Watch it. But also it's super perfect to have it on, like, background during a party because people will be like, what is this? How have I never seen this? Yeah.
Then the seven horror films I fit into the spooky season. 1990s 8 I woke up early the Day I Died, which stars Billy Zane. It's a Edward script that never got made that is made into a silent film starring Billy Zane. He escapes from a mental institution and goes on this sort of like, weird odyssey of like, LA stuff. And Christina Ricci is part of the ensemble. I highly recommend you check that out. 2000's Bless the Child, 2003's the Gathering, 2003's I Love youe Work, which prominently features a video store in it. So I highly recommend that 2009's After Dot Life, not Afterlife. After Dot Life, 2018 Distorted and 2022's Monstrous.
Now, the three films that are not horror at all but have spooky names is 1993's Cemetery Club.
[00:19:13] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:19:14] Speaker C: Right.
[00:19:14] Speaker A: Not spooky at all.
Mickey, you'll know this one because we saw it in the theater together when we were going to acting school.
[00:19:21] Speaker B: Pumpkin.
[00:19:22] Speaker A: Pumpkin. 2002's Pumpkin.
[00:19:24] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, Pumpkin was good.
[00:19:26] Speaker A: And then 2003's Monster, which crime thriller but not really horror.
[00:19:32] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:19:32] Speaker A: You know what I mean?
[00:19:33] Speaker B: It's.
[00:19:33] Speaker A: It's Charlize Theron's Oscar winning portrayal.
[00:19:36] Speaker B: Yeah, of course.
[00:19:38] Speaker A: So that's my pick for the queen of Halloween. And I would pair this with what Molly mentioned earlier. I mean, so Christina Ricci's favorite candy of all time is Reese's. Reese's Pieces.
Right, the little Reese's Pieces. I love them. Reese's Pieces. Yeah, Reese's Pieces. I call them Reese's Pieces, like a lot of people do.
But you got to go with the classiest of the Reese's peanut butter choices. And I think we all agree the classiest choice you could make is the white pumpkin. Right?
[00:20:11] Speaker B: The white pumpkin.
[00:20:13] Speaker A: I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
[00:20:14] Speaker B: The white ghost.
[00:20:15] Speaker A: The white. There are white ghost is as Mickey. I'm quoting Mickey here. Divine. Absolutely fine.
[00:20:22] Speaker B: Great. With an espresso.
[00:20:24] Speaker C: Oh.
[00:20:24] Speaker A: Oh, I've never. I've never had it with an espresso.
[00:20:28] Speaker B: It's ready to have a mouth orgasm.
[00:20:30] Speaker A: Okay. How do you. How do you do this?
How do you do an orgasm?
[00:20:36] Speaker B: Explain this to me.
[00:20:38] Speaker A: No, how do you. How do you. How are you having your espresso with. With the white.
[00:20:42] Speaker C: You take a bite, you give it a little chew, and then you take a sip.
[00:20:47] Speaker B: Yeah, it's like, think about, like you want to break the flavor open in your mouth. So you take that first initial bite
[00:20:51] Speaker A: of the white guys.
[00:20:52] Speaker B: I go for the head first. And then you kind of on your back molars. Sometimes I go take that first crunch. So you get the little. You release the peanut butter white chocolate flavor. And then you take a sip of espresso, washing that bite down. And what you get is you get a strong coffee.
White chocolate, peanut butter shoot down the throat. It's incredible.
[00:21:14] Speaker A: This, that. Well, I don't know about the last part of what you said is a little. Little gross, but the rest of it. That sounds wonderful.
[00:21:22] Speaker B: Yeah. Well, we're in this medium. I really feel like I have to paint a picture for our listeners.
[00:21:27] Speaker A: Thank you. In the shooting down the throat. Really?
Now, I do want to mention the three television credits that I have here, which is the Lizzie Borden Took an Axe from 2014 and Lizzie Borden Chronicles 2015, where she plays Lizzie Borden.
[00:21:46] Speaker C: Yellow jackets.
Did I jump ahead?
[00:21:50] Speaker A: No, no, that's okay. Yellow jackets as well. And then of course, Netflix's Wednesday right. Where she doesn't play Wednesday Adams. But yeah, but I mean, she's the best. When just like the idea of what we think of Wednesday Adams Is. Is hers. Her.
[00:22:05] Speaker B: Her 100.
[00:22:06] Speaker A: Absolutely.
Good.
[00:22:09] Speaker B: Adam's family, too.
Incredible.
[00:22:12] Speaker A: So, yeah, that's. That's my. That's my pitch for the Queen of Halloween.
[00:22:16] Speaker C: That's a great one. I'm ashamed. I didn't even consider it.
[00:22:19] Speaker A: What do you. Oh, Molly. What do you got?
Who'd you pick?
[00:22:23] Speaker C: Well, I didn't go with what I thought was gonna be everybody's pick, which I thought.
[00:22:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:22:32] Speaker C: Was gonna be Jamie Lee Curtis or a Janet Lee or something, but I didn't. But I didn't.
I went with a current person who I think will continue to do really great horror films. And she's just so fucking good.
And that's Samara Weaving.
[00:22:52] Speaker B: Okay. Yep, Yep.
[00:22:53] Speaker A: Wow. What a.
[00:22:56] Speaker B: Early in her throne, you might say early in her queendom.
[00:22:59] Speaker C: And her scream, she's got like that wavy, shaky, just horrifying screaming.
It's so good. I feel like if we could just play it right now.
Yeah. So good.
Yeah. So I chose her, and I wasn't prepared to. Well, here. Okay, so we'll just. I'll just list. Because you went down the line. I'll just list a couple. And she doesn't have nearly as many credits as a Christina. Christina Ricci, however.
And I have not seen all of these, but I've started some of them and not finished all of them.
[00:23:51] Speaker B: But did you almost say. Did you almost say Christini Ricci
[00:23:57] Speaker A: pieces?
Yeah, we should make a Halloween candy.
[00:24:10] Speaker C: Oh, it's like if you're having little crostinis, they could be little.
Okay, we gotta think about that.
Okay, so I'm just gonna go down the list. We have Mayhem, which we've started. Never finished.
Really.
[00:24:27] Speaker B: Babysitter.
[00:24:28] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:24:29] Speaker A: Babysitter is fine.
[00:24:30] Speaker C: Yeah, yeah, babysitter, ready or not. Of course, babysitter. Killer queen. Scream 6, Asriel, which we also have started and not finished, but we've got.
[00:24:40] Speaker A: That's where the. The silent one, right?
[00:24:42] Speaker B: The silent one.
[00:24:43] Speaker A: Yes, yes.
[00:24:44] Speaker C: They're like, here, come do this movie. Be the lead role and don't say a word.
[00:24:48] Speaker A: She's amazing. Yeah.
[00:24:50] Speaker B: One of the best things you can get as an actor because then you're just all just. You're all feel. You're all vibes, you're all reactions.
[00:24:55] Speaker C: I don't have to memorize any lines.
[00:24:56] Speaker A: Amazing.
[00:24:58] Speaker C: And ready or not too.
So, I mean. And that's not all. There's. There's another one over my Dead body, which I think is this year, which I haven't seen yet, but.
[00:25:09] Speaker B: And then that she has that one that's got like, eenie meenie. Did you say any meanie?
[00:25:12] Speaker C: Yeah, that's more of like a thriller though, I think.
[00:25:15] Speaker B: Okay, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No Tomorrow Weaving. Incredible.
[00:25:18] Speaker C: She's great.
[00:25:19] Speaker A: Oh, and of course, Ash versus the Evil Dead, the television.
She was, she was in the two part like season finale of season one, and she's fantastic in. That's very, very early on in her career. Yeah, yeah, yeah, she's amazing. She's, She's, I think a case of some nepotism. That is.
[00:25:40] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:25:40] Speaker A: Like, but, but like, it's like you can't deny, you know?
[00:25:47] Speaker B: Yeah, I mean, yeah, yeah. I mean like Jamie Lee Curtis, you know, it's, she's, yeah, she comes from strong genes, but she obviously has the chops.
[00:25:57] Speaker A: She's got. Oh, man, does she have the job. She's amazing.
Okay, that's, that's a fantastic pic. Mick. Mickey.
[00:26:05] Speaker B: Yeah, well, so bringing us home.
[00:26:07] Speaker A: So I guess we had no crossover. That's kind of amazing.
[00:26:09] Speaker B: Did we?
[00:26:10] Speaker C: Well.
[00:26:10] Speaker B: Oh, no, I, I, So I was under the, under the assumption that one of the two of you would do Cassandra Peterson and, or Jamie Lee Curtis, so I chose to avoid them both.
[00:26:21] Speaker C: I intentionally did not choose.
[00:26:25] Speaker B: But I look at it like this. There are many queens in, in the Halloween world. There are many Royal Majesties fitting. Unholy. Yeah, Majesties. All fitting of the title Halloween Queen Video store edition. But I thought, I, I thought of somebody that might be overlooked sometimes, and that is Deborah Hill.
[00:26:49] Speaker A: Deborah Hill. Okay. Someone actually not in front of the camp. Oh, I see. I even consider this a possibility.
[00:26:55] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:26:56] Speaker B: Yeah. So when you think about, like, I, I think that if you were, if you're in a big group of people talking about who are the kings and queens of everything, everything kind of goes back to the Halloween film. Or at least that's for me. For me it does, for sure. It's, it's an early entry into my life, really got me into the horror films, learning the history of it and how it, you know, kind of shot off independent film and spun or spurned so many different people trying to recreate the magic of what was Halloween.
You know, I think about that and I think of John Carpenter might be the king of Halloween, but then Debra Hill definitely deserves the position as Queen of Halloween.
[00:27:32] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:27:34] Speaker B: Because she didn't just produce it. And that's the thing. So for those who don't know, Deborah Hill was the producer with John Carpenter early on and she was the producer of the original Halloween film. But she wasn't just the producer. I would call her a co creator. Oh, for sure, for sure.
She co wrote it.
She helped transform what was the original character of Laurie Strode. She kind of added a lot of her own input into how they spoke the dialogue.
She worked close to Jamie Lee Curtis. So if we think of Jamie Lee Curtis as the scream queen, then I think we owe a lot of that to Deborah Hill as well. So somebody that might often get overlooked at being a strong, powerful female presence in the horror genre. That's why I'm bringing, bringing Deborah Hill in the conversation and not just producing the original Halloween, but also Halloween 2, Halloween 3, the fog and the Dead Zone, other notable films that aren't necessarily horror. But she also produced Escape from New York and she produced Clue. She produced, she produced Clue. Yeah, she was a producer. Clue.
[00:28:42] Speaker A: Oh really? I did not know that. That's amazing.
[00:28:45] Speaker B: Yeah. There's also another. Oh, Adventures in Babysitting.
[00:28:50] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:28:51] Speaker B: All, all movies that honestly like these movies are movies that are like rank very high in my enjoyability. Like I like, I, I love Clue. I love.
Well, you get Tim Curry mixed into this. He believe, I believe he would be a. Hello, Queen of all the queens.
[00:29:07] Speaker C: Yeah, but actually, yeah, I did ask someone last night who they're Halloween queen would be and they said Tim Curry. And I was like, oh, I kind of want to steal that.
[00:29:16] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, that's a great, that's a fantastic pick. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:29:21] Speaker B: So, so I just think that, that as, as horror film fans, as people who, who love the genre, it's, it's nice to kind of, I think, hold up recognition to somebody that, that sometimes gets third or fourth mention on the, you know, the seismic film of Halloween. So I'm giving a little shout out to, you know, God rest her soul, Deborah Hill. Fantastic woman. Really Blaze path for female producers in Hollywood.
Yeah. Thank you for your contribution to the horror genre.
[00:29:56] Speaker A: So this brings up a, this brings up a, an interesting sort of section of like male toxicity, right?
[00:30:06] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:30:07] Speaker A: In misogyny amongst men who identify themselves as progressive feminist men. Where I have to win the feminism thing. And this is very upsetting to me because you chose Deborah Hill, which is a more.
[00:30:26] Speaker B: It beats me.
[00:30:27] Speaker A: And the, I'm a more progressive male and feminism.
[00:30:33] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, Well, I, I, I, you know, I, I do with the bectal test and for those who don't know the Bechtal test, it's like if a, it's two women.
[00:30:45] Speaker A: Explain to Molly specifically what that is.
[00:30:47] Speaker B: Let me, I'm Explaining more.
I'm explaining it more to our. To our listeners at home.
[00:30:52] Speaker A: Everybody knows what it is, Vicki.
[00:30:54] Speaker B: Come on. Does everybody know what a Beck Test is?
[00:30:56] Speaker A: Everybody knows what the test is.
[00:30:58] Speaker B: A bunch of. A bunch of dudes listening to a podcast about horror films. You think. I guess that they would be. Yeah, I'm. That's right.
[00:31:06] Speaker C: It doesn't matter.
[00:31:07] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:31:07] Speaker C: They don't need to know.
[00:31:08] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:31:09] Speaker C: I'm kidding.
[00:31:11] Speaker B: No, no, I'm not gonna bore you with. With Bechtel Test, but also I. I wanted to just throw in one more thing you've ever seen.
What's the movie?
[00:31:24] Speaker C: I know what you did last summer. I still know what you did last summer. Halloween, Friday, 13th.
[00:31:30] Speaker B: Yes, yes, yes.
[00:31:31] Speaker A: Pet Cemetery.
[00:31:34] Speaker B: Fisher King. The Fisher King.
[00:31:35] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:31:37] Speaker B: Dance. The big. Yeah, it was Deborah Hill. But the big dance scene in, like, the Metro station or the terminal, she was the reason why that scene even exists.
[00:31:46] Speaker A: Oh, really?
[00:31:47] Speaker B: It was an idea. And they were like, there's no way we can get them to it. She went in and negotiated the whole thing to shut down the terminal, allow this whole scene to take place. I was listening to a little docu series thing about her when I was at the gym today just to kind of, you know, refresh my knowledge of things that I need to know to talk about this person. And she. Yeah, they're like, you don't understand. That would not have happened without Deborah Hill. She's knew how to negotiate people. She knew how to like to talk with people, convince them to be a part of the team. She just seemed like a real. Like a real amazing force in getting things done for films, which is a very hard thing to do. But also, it. It shows such.
[00:32:22] Speaker A: If you.
[00:32:23] Speaker B: If you know the history of Halloween and how they had to pull it together on a shoestring budget. Would it have happened without Deborah Hill? I don't think it would have.
[00:32:29] Speaker A: No, it wouldn't. It wouldn't be. It wouldn't be a. I don't think it would even exist. But also. Yeah, it's. It's like. Yeah, especially in the 70s, all those. All the films you love, a woman has her touch on it somewhere. You know what I mean?
[00:32:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:47] Speaker A: A woman's touch.
[00:32:48] Speaker B: A woman's touch is a. Is a valuable thing.
Molly, can you explain to us.
[00:32:54] Speaker C: Yeah, let me help.
[00:32:56] Speaker B: What is the magic of a woman's touch? Why is it. Why is it so magical?
You don't have to do that. I'm getting weird.
[00:33:05] Speaker C: I'm just gonna start talking. You're just gonna bleep it. Yeah.
[00:33:08] Speaker B: Big top peewee.
[00:33:09] Speaker A: Oh, another one of hers. Did we mention who's who? What candy goes with Samara Weaving and what candy goes with Deborah.
[00:33:16] Speaker B: Oh, I got mine.
[00:33:18] Speaker C: I always choose a white chocolate Reese's Ghost, so. I'm sorry.
Yeah, yeah. You know, I can't because it, like, you know, you. I just. Yep, that's it.
[00:33:30] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:33:31] Speaker C: That's it. I mean, it goes with everything.
[00:33:34] Speaker B: Well, my. What I. What I had picked for Debri Hill
[00:33:38] Speaker A: was going to be a white chocolate Reese's.
Really?
[00:33:48] Speaker C: Milk chocolate bat.
[00:33:49] Speaker B: No, no, mine has a reason, though, because the. The idea of the sheet over the boyfriend.
[00:33:55] Speaker A: Yeah. Yes.
[00:33:57] Speaker B: That was Deborah Hill. So a white chocolate ghost is representative of that idea that she came up with for Halloween, which is, you know, notably John Carpenter said it was a brilliant idea that. That Debra Hill came up with that they had to put in where she mistakes Michael for her boyfriend in the sheet.
[00:34:14] Speaker C: Like, you could do a Samara Weaving with candy cigarettes.
[00:34:19] Speaker B: Yeah, Candy cigarettes be good. Yeah, yeah.
[00:34:22] Speaker A: I would say to switch it up for Mickey's stay with the White Ghost. Right.
But do the white marshmallow. No, no. With espresso. Because she's a producer and she's got it. She's always on it to get done. So, you know.
[00:34:39] Speaker B: That's brilliant.
[00:34:39] Speaker A: Yeah.
And I will say the white ghost thing, it's. That. That's interesting because it's like. It's a highly debated sort of thing. Right. Because it's like, why does he put the sheet on? Is he being funny? Is he trying. Is he trying to, like, be seen through someone else's eyes? Is. You know what I mean? It's. It's. Yeah, yeah. And I love that image. That was one. I do homemade Halloween cards.
Not the last two years, but in many years. And one of the years that was. It's an. It's a fun drawing to make. It's basically, you know, a ghost with, you know, you got the feet sticking out and the two hands and the glasses and the knife. Yeah, that's great.
So that's. I think that's very funny that we. We all chose different people.
Right. But we all chose the same candy.
[00:35:34] Speaker B: Well, also funny because I thought when you asked this question. So. So when you asked the question of who was the Halloween queen, immediately what came to mind for me was Jamie Lee Curtis and Cassandra Peterson.
[00:35:45] Speaker C: Yeah, of course. Same.
[00:35:46] Speaker B: So I. I had to force myself to be like, no, no, get outside of that and think about it. And it. It led me to the. Which was kind of fun part of this question. I think that if you're at home, this is a great thing for you to do as well.
Think about other women other than those two that have had major impacts or not women. It can, like I said, we don't want to genderize it too much. It can be like with Tim Curry is a great, you know, I think, example Just, just all the people outside of those couple that hit immediately. When you think about horror films or Halloween, it was. It was a fun adventure for me to go down. I had, you know, some other ideas of people as well, but it definitely, every time I came back to Mickey, what is your, like, person who impacted Halloween for you that you would say is a queen and deserves your spot on the Mount Rushmore of those people?
[00:36:35] Speaker A: So good, good question.
[00:36:36] Speaker C: Good job, Mickey.
[00:36:37] Speaker B: Yeah, good. Good staff meeting.
Awesome idea for a Halloween podcast for, you know, a topic of conversation.
[00:36:46] Speaker C: Great idea.
[00:36:47] Speaker A: And it'll be interesting to see, like, what the customers in the video store think and, like, who they. Who they would add.
[00:36:55] Speaker B: Right. So listen, different generations will have different ideas of what they think.
[00:37:00] Speaker A: You know, listener, chime in with who you think should be the unholy majesty of All Hallows Eve or the Halloween Queen or what's the short version?
[00:37:12] Speaker B: The Halloween.
[00:37:14] Speaker A: Halloween, Halloween.
[00:37:15] Speaker B: The video started
[00:37:19] Speaker A: real quick. I'll put out there along the Deborah Hill route. Mary Lambert, who directed Pet Sematary, and I just recently saw pet sematary 2.
I cannot recommend it enough really.
[00:37:32] Speaker B: With. With what's his name?
[00:37:34] Speaker A: Edward Furlong. Edward Furlong and Clancy Brown. Just.
[00:37:38] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:37:39] Speaker A: Clancy Brow.
Bringing real Highlander vibes. Just having. Having. He knows exactly what movie he's in, and he is. He is bringing it in the best way possible.
[00:37:48] Speaker B: Oh, wait, no, he's the doctor. Yeah.
[00:37:51] Speaker A: Clancy Brown. No, he's. He's like the sheriff character.
[00:37:57] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:37:58] Speaker A: He. I think he may have.
Yeah, it's what's His Face from ER plays the dad who's the vet. Not the doctor.
[00:38:06] Speaker B: The vet.
[00:38:06] Speaker A: He's a vet in this one. Yeah, that's right.
[00:38:08] Speaker B: That's right. Okay.
[00:38:09] Speaker A: Pet cemetery, too. Anyways, well, listener, thank you so much for joining us this Halloween season where we only got the one episode this season for you, but we're back hopefully recording some new episodes, getting back on the horse, hopefully more Molly back in the saddle and.
[00:38:29] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:38:30] Speaker C: So Ghost Train.
[00:38:32] Speaker B: Well, before you guys leave, I just want to tell you I know we're going to see each other, you know, up in the store. We're going to do a lot of stuff.
But speaking of. That's really good. Terror Train. Molly. The Terror Train.
[00:38:43] Speaker A: Oh, yeah.
[00:38:44] Speaker C: Back on the terror train again.
[00:38:47] Speaker B: Sorry.
[00:38:47] Speaker A: That's good New Year's. That's good New Year's horror.
[00:38:50] Speaker B: Yeah. But I just want to tell you guys, happy Halloween. And to our listeners, Happy Halloween. Very happy to be back at this time of the year and kick it off again with a little Halloween spooky edition of the podcast.
[00:39:03] Speaker A: Go back and listen to our other spooky episodes and the Halloween playlist.
[00:39:07] Speaker C: Do it if you dare.
Whoa.
I dare you.
No, I did it wrong.
[00:39:24] Speaker B: I think that's good.
[00:39:25] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:39:26] Speaker B: Good, good, good.
